About this background remover

Background Remover is a free tool that uses on-device AI to automatically cut the subject out of any photo, then lets you drop in a new background or download a clean transparent PNG.

Upload a portrait, product shot, logo, or animal photo and a segmentation model isolates the foreground in seconds — no manual masking or selection work. From there you can keep the cut-out transparent or place it on a solid color, gradient, custom image, or framed backdrop. People use it to:

Because the whole tool runs in your browser, your images are never uploaded to a server — the AI model and the final composite both stay on your device, so private headshots and unreleased product shots remain confidential.

Unlike subscription editors that gate exports behind a watermark or login, this remover is genuinely free and unlimited, and once the AI model has downloaded (about 90 MB, on the first run) the processing happens on your device. Bookmark it whenever you need a fast, private cut-out.

How to use
  1. Upload a photo by clicking the drop zone, dragging an image in, or pasting from your clipboard.
  2. Wait a few seconds while the on-device AI model isolates the foreground subject automatically.
  3. Pick a new background — keep it transparent, or choose a solid color, gradient, or your own image.
  4. Add an optional frame or shape, and fine-tune the Edge Feather and Foreground Scale sliders.
  5. Choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP and a size, then click Download to save your finished image.
FAQ

Yes. As well as JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, ICO, SVG and AVIF, this tool now reads HEIC and HEIF (the format iPhones and most modern Android phones shoot in, using HEVC), TIFF, Photoshop PSD and PSB, TGA, Netpbm PPM/PGM/PBM, Apple ICNS, and camera RAW from every major brand — CR2, CR3, CRW, NEF, NRW, ARW, SR2, DNG, ORF, RAF, RW2, SRW, PEF, 3FR, ERF, MRW, DCR, KDC, MEF and X3F. Anything your browser cannot open by itself is decoded on your own device, in the page, before the tool touches it — nothing is uploaded and there is nothing to install. JPEG XL, JPEG 2000, DDS and OpenEXR are the exceptions; export those as PNG or JPEG first.

Yes. The background remover is completely free with no account, sign-up, watermark, or subscription. There is no per-image limit and no premium tier holding back features. The AI model runs on your own device, so there are no server costs to pass on to you.

No. Everything happens locally in your browser. The segmentation model downloads once and then runs on your device, and the final composite is drawn on a canvas in your browser. Your photos never leave your computer, which keeps private headshots, product shots, and client work fully confidential.

You can drop in JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF, HEIC/HEIF from an iPhone, TIFF, Photoshop PSD, TGA or a camera RAW file (CR2, CR3, NEF, ARW, DNG and the rest) up to 10 MB. Anything the browser cannot read on its own is converted on your device first. For the output you can export as PNG, JPEG, or WebP, and you can resize the result to 1080p, 4K, or a custom width and height before downloading.

After the background is removed, leave the background set to Transparent, choose PNG as the export format, then click Download. PNG is the only common format that preserves transparency, so JPEG would fill the empty area with a solid color instead.

Wispy hair, fur, glass, and motion blur are hard for any automatic segmentation model because the edge between subject and background is genuinely ambiguous. Use Shrink Edge to pull the cut-out in past the pale halo, Smooth Outline to tidy stair-stepping, Edge Feather to soften a harsh outline and Remove Colour Fringe to take the old background's colour out of the edge pixels — and start from a sharp, well-lit photo with good contrast for the cleanest result.

Not on the first run: that needs a connection to download the AI model (about 90 MB). After that the processing runs on your device, and your browser normally keeps the model cached, so later runs are faster and need little or no data. The manual eraser needs no model at all.

Yes. After removing the original background you can drop in a solid color, a preset or custom gradient, or your own image, and add a frame such as rounded, circle, polaroid, or shadow. This makes it easy to build product photos and profile pictures on a clean, consistent backdrop.
